Children's orthopaedics
Southampton is a regional referral centre for children with a variety of orthopaedic problems.
The service is led by a specialist team of doctors and nurses and incorporates a designated children’s orthopaedic ward, outpatient clinics, therapists and children’s community nursing team.
Specialist areas of treatment include:
- Hip surgery (for example, for developmental dysplasia of the hip)
- Foot and ankle surgery (for example, for club foot)
- Limb lengthening and deformity correction with external fixators
- Upper limb surgery
- Musculoskeletal infection and disorders.
- Spinal surgery
- Children’s trauma
- Cerebral palsy and neuromuscular disorders
Outpatient clinics are held throughout the week, led by either a consultant or an advanced nurse practitioner. They are located in the children’s orthopaedic outpatient department at Southampton General Hospital. Additional outreach clinics are run in Portsmouth, Basingstoke, Chichester, Guernsey, Jersey and Poole General Hospital.
Referrals to a clinic are made through your GP or your child may be followed up in the clinic after discharge from hospital.
