Inpatients (staying in hospital)

Ward G3 is a 20 bedded ward that cares for children aged 0 to 16 (up to 18 years if in full time education), for both planned and emergency admissions.

Call us on 023 8120 6486.

Pre-admission visit

You may be asked to bring your child to the hospital for a pre-admission appointment. This allows the team to meet with you, discuss the planned surgery and organise any pre-operative investigations, such as x-rays or blood tests. You and your child can visit the ward to meet the staff and have any questions about admission answered.

Admission

Please telephone the ward on the day of admission to ensure a bed is available for your child. Please read your admission letter carefully and note to follow any starvation instructions.

If you have any questions regarding the admission please contact the ward on 023 8120 6486 or 023 8120 4991 (nurse practitioners).

Parent and carer facilities

There is facility for one parent or carer to be resident on the ward, with availability of a shower, toilet and coffee making facilities and a parents’ room for your use.

Visiting

Visiting is throughout the day up until 8pm for non-parent visitors.

An adult must accompany all visitors under the age of 16.

Play specialist

A play specialist is available to assist your child in coping with admission to hospital and treatment programmes.

School

School is compulsory for children whose admission is longer than five days.

Discharge from hospital

When your child is ready to be discharged they may require:

  • an outpatient appointment, given to you either before you leave the ward or sent by post.
  • a patient information discharge letter
  • medicines to take home.

Physiotherapy and occupational therapy

The therapists and ward team will assess and advise you on your child’s equipment needs to assist in their recovery. If you think your child will need a wheelchair following their operation it is a good idea to contact your local British Red Cross (who loan out equipment) as early as possible.
