Non-invasive ventilation

We work with over 400 patients who are at home on non-invasive ventilation, and a small number who are at home with tracheostomies. We're a tertiary referral service, which means we provide respiratory support for patients across a large area, including Hampshire, Dorset, Wiltshire and the Isle of Wight.

If you're receiving non-invasive ventilation at home, we'll provide you with long term care taking all your needs into account, as well as your family or carers.

You might receive non-invasive ventilation at home if you have breathing failure, or a condition linked to this such as

  • neuromuscular disorders, for example motor neurone disease, muscular dystrophy or myotonic dystrophy
  • chronic obstructive lung disease
  • obstructive sleep apnoea or obesity hypoventilation syndrome
  • chest wall disorders, such as kyphoscoliosis
  • spinal trauma.

We run twice weekly specialised clinics on Wednesday afternoons and Friday mornings where you'll be reviewed by consultants, nursing staff and specialist physiotherapists. At your appointment, your ventilator will be checked, and any equipment that goes with it will be checked and replaced as needed.

Your symptoms will be reviewed, and you can talk to us about any issues that you, your family or carers are having.

We work closely with other departments including neurology, gastroenterology and palliative care, to make sure we provide high quality care for patients with neuromuscular disorders.

If you're having issues with your symptoms or equipment, we can see you at short notice in an emergency appointment.
