Neurology
The neurology department provides services for most of central southern England including Southampton, Winchester, Portsmouth, Basingstoke, Salisbury, Isle of Wight, Chichester and the Channel Islands.
Neurology clinics are held in hospitals around the region as well as in the Wessex Neurological Centre at Southampton General Hospital.
Many diseases affecting the brain, spine, nerves or muscles will be managed by a neurologist. Some of the most common conditions include epilepsy, multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson’s disease and stroke. However, there are a large number of other neurological symptoms and diseases treated by neurologists here. The department's main specialty areas are:
- Neuromuscular disorders (WERMANS)
- Movement disorders (including Parkinson's disease)
- Neuroinflammatory diseases (including multiple sclerosis)
- Stroke
- Epilepsy
- Cognitive disorders
- Atypical parkinsonian syndrome service
- The Face Place
- The Wessex facial nerve centre
