Children's respiratory sleep service

At UHS, our paediatric sleep team care for children who require sleep studies from newborn infants to adolescents. The studies can be performed as inpatient studies or at home.

The service was created in 2011 and we perform around 1400 sleep studies each year.

The service works closely with the long-term ventilation team, respiratory medicine, neonatology, endocrinology, ENT and may other services.

What is a sleep study?

A sleep study monitors a child’s sleep for sleep disordered breathing overnight. The study is a non-invasive test.

Waiting times

Due to a high volume of referrals for this service, waiting times can be extended and can also be affected by whether you choose to have the study done in hospital or at home. We will send you a letter asking which option you would prefer - please let us know as soon as possible so we can arrange this for you.

For most families, the referrals are equally urgent so unless our medical consultants consider a case to be severe, appointments will be offered in order based on the date that the referral was made.

How to find us

We are based in two main locations. Please check your appointment letter to make sure you know where you are going.

PMU (paediatric medical unit)/G2 on G level

Biomedical research centre on C level - come into the hospital through the main entrance on C level. Continue to the end of the corridor, then turn right to go into the West Wing. Continue along the corridor until you reach a purple sign for the biomedical research centre.
