Osteoporosis centre
Our osteoporosis centre carries out DXA scans and supports an expanding research programme within the Trust and the MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit (MRC LEU).
DXA scanning
We use two hologic bone densitometers for DXA scanning, as well as state-of-the-art peripheral quantitative CT (pQCT) and high resolution microCT bone assessment instruments.
We perform around 5000 DXA scans a year, assessing bones for osteoporosis. Find out more on the bone mineral density scan page.
Research
Together, the MRC LEU and osteoporosis centre at Southampton General Hospital are one of the leading clinical bone centres in the UK and internationally.
As part of our research programme, the novel scanning of neonates and young children has established an extensive database of information related to the investigation of pre and peri-natal influences on later adult bone disease.
Fracture prevention
We also work with colleagues in orthopaedics and ortho-geriatrics to support the secondary fracture prevention service.
