Tuberculosis

Medication used to treat TB, showing tablets.

Our tuberculosis (TB) and BCG vaccination service is run from the Royal South Hants Hospital, in the Fanshawe Wing.

Our outpatient service (for patients who don't need to stay in hospital) is also at the Royal South Hants, Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm. This service is led by nurses, with doctors visiting on Wednesday mornings.

If you have TB and need to stay in hospital, our specialist medical, nursing and pharmacy team will look after you in the isolation facilities at Southampton General Hospital.

You might be referred to us from local primary care services, hospital or occupational health services.

National tuberculosis screening

Free latent TB testing is available to people aged 16 to 35, who were born in a high risk country and have moved to the UK in the last five years. This is a blood test that can be taken in Southampton GP surgeries. The aim is to detect latent TB, which does not have any symptoms. Once diagnosed, the team can provide the necessary treatment to prevent the active disease, which will help to reduce the rate of active TB in Southampton.
