Specialist dietitians (cystic fibrosis)

Good nutrition plays a vital role in maintaining your health if you have cystic fibrosis. Taking care of your nutritional status and ensuing that you are a good weight for your height is essential to promote optimal lung function and general wellbeing.

Our CF dietetic team are here to support you in all aspects of your nutritional care. We work closely with members of your CF team including nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, psychologists, social-workers, and pharmacists. Our role is to provide evidence based, personalised care. We can help you with general nutritional support, healthy eating, vitamin therapy, managing pancreatic enzyme therapy (Creon), diabetes and sports nutrition.

We also provide input and support in the following services:

CF bone services – we lead this service alongside Thom Daniels and Prof Nigel Arden. We run virtual and face to face clinics.

CF diabetes services – we work closely with Professor Holt and our CF specialist diabetes nurse to provide inpatient and outpatient CF diabetes care.

CF gastroenterology services - we provide first line gastroenterology support to manage common CF related conditions for example constipation, maldigestion and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

    Clare Pearson

    CF dietetic team lead

    Clare is the lead dietitian for adult cystic fibrosis at University Hospital Southampton. Clare has worked in the NHS since 1999 and joined the Wessex adult cystic fibrosis service in 2002. Her special interests are gastroenterology and CF related bone disease. Clare is a member of the British Dietetic Association Cystic Fibrosis Interest Group which involves collaborating with other CF dietitians to update guidance though working groups and presentations.

    Kirstie Ballinger

    Kirstie joined the CF team in 2016 working as an adult and pediatric CF dietitian before joining the adult team full time in 2017. She has a keen interest in research and recently accepted an internship to study body composition within CF. Her other departmental roles include research interventionist for CFHealthHub, quality improvement lead, as well as dietetic lead for patients transitioning to the adult CF service.

  • Ann-Marie Jones
    Ann-Marie Jones

    Ann-Marie joined the CF team in 2019, working a split post as an adult allergy dietitian and adult CF dietitian. She developed the CF dietetic educational resource for ward D10 staff and continues to be involved with teaching and educational programmes within CF. She is also secretary of the South East branch of the British Dietetic Association.
