We are the South Coast's regional referral unit for complex liver disease. We are able to provide access to state-of-art treatments through our dedicated clinical research team. Southampton has an international reputation in liver research. We are a centre of excellence and are actively participating in performing fundamental research to develop new treatments to treat hepatocellular carcinoma, cirrhosis and the full spectrum of liver diseases. Our vision is to offer the opportunity to all patients to take part in research.

We conduct a range of studies in the following areas:

  • Primary biliary cholangitis/primary sclerosing cholangitis
  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
  • Alcoholic hepatitis
  • Alcohol and drinking behaviour
  • Drug-induced liver Injury
  • Autoimmune hepatitis
  • Hepatocellular carcinoma
  • Hepatitis B and C
  • Advanced cirrhosis/varices/encephalopathy trials
