What happens when I come in?

You will be given an appointment to attend a workshop where you will be given general information about cancer treatments and any side effects you may experience. These are led by our cancer specialist nurses.

When you come in for treatment, you will be given very specific information about the type of treatment you're having. You'll have the chance to ask questions, and we will give you a phone number to call if you think of any other questions after leaving the clinic.

Everyone who attends the unit for treatment must have a blood test before seeing their consultant or nurse practitioner. On arrival to the ward, take a ticket and wait to be called for your blood test. Once you've had this done, report to reception.

The time you spend on the unit will vary depending on your treatment.

The unit is consultant led so you can expect to see your doctor regularly. Alongside our specially trained nurse practitioners, they will check on your progress and prescribe treatment.

Problems after your treatment

We will give you an emergency telephone number for you to call if you become unwell after treatment. The phone is held by a nurse in the acute oncology unit who will decide if you need to be seen by a doctor or if they can manage the problem over the phone. This number is for treatment-related problems only.
