Meet the team

We have a team of more than 40 specialist staff who work closely with other colleagues to provide high quality care.

The imaging team

Administration, reception and secretarial staff

Our administrative team may well be your first point of contact. They send invitations for screening, help with telephone enquiries, and co-ordinate appointments and test results. The team liaises with other screening units, hospitals and GPs.

Radiographic assistants (RDAS)

The radiographic assistants are responsible for the preparation of screening mammograms for reporting, stocktaking, and post processing completed examinations. They provide support clinically for radiographers and radiologists; chaperoning patients through their procedures, and help to maintain the workflow of the department.

Assistant practitioners

These are state-registered members of staff specifically qualified in mammography for first stage screening and women with symptoms. They are responsible for some of the roles previously performed solely by radiographers, and also support our radiographers and radiologists.

Radiographers

Our unit is staffed by state-registered professionally-qualified radiographers, with specialist training in mammography. They are responsible for screening and symptomatic mammography, and work on mobile screening units as well as at our department at the Princess Anne Hospital. They are also responsible for the imaging at second stage screening and supporting radiologists.

Advanced practitioners

These are senior radiographers with additional qualifications, who have extended their roles and responsibilities to perform some tasks that used to be done by doctors.

Radiologists

We have seven consultants who specialise in interpreting medical images and performing advanced radiological procedures to support diagnosis, treatment and follow-up. They review and report on mammograms, CT and MRI scans and perform ultrasounds. They are also responsible for advanced radiological procedures, such as core biopsy and pre-operative localisation.

The imaging unit works closely alongside other members of our multi-disciplinary team, which includes

  • administration and secretarial staff for surgery and oncology
  • breast surgeons
  • specialist breast care nurses
  • oncologists
  • radiotherapists
  • pathologists and cytologists
  • research nurses.

Medical students and staff training

As a specialist service within a large university teaching hospital, we provide training for medical students and other professional staff furthering their education. However, patient choice and confidentiality is respected at all times and if you have any concerns please speak to a member of staff.

Wessex Cancer Trust

The Wessex Cancer Trust supports many aspects of cancer care for adults and children, including research, counselling, the production of information leaflets, the appointment of breast care nurses, the improvement of patient facilities, the purchase of equipment and the provision of mobile breast screening units. It also provides financial help for cancer patients and their families. If you would like more information please call 023 8067 2200 or visit www.wessexcancer.org.uk
