Stroke research

The stroke department has recently become a National Institute of Health (NIHR) Hyperacute Stroke Research Centre. This means that we aim to recruit many patients in the very early stages of having had a stroke within nine hours of them being admitted to hospital in order to minimise the brain damage caused by a stroke. This may be through medications, devices to remove blood clots or other treatments. You may well be approached by one of the stroke research team during the early part of your hospital admission asking if you want to take part in our research. They will provide you with information about what’s involved; there is no obligation to take part.

In addition, we have a broad portfolio of randomised clinical trials and other high quality clinical studies. These cover:

  • prevention
  • acute care
  • primary care
  • rehabilitation
  • service development
  • translational research

Trials currently recruiting

Clinical trials we are currently recruiting in to include

  • Alteplase-Tenecteplase Trial Evaluation for Stroke Thrombolysis (ATTEST 2)
  • Tenecteplase in Wake-up Ischaemic Stroke Trial (TWIST)
  • Rates, risks and routes to reduce vascular dementia (R4VaD)
  • Optimal timing of anticoagulation after stroke (OPTIMAS)
  • DNA Lacunar Study 2
