Banksy's Game Changer and wellbeing at UHS

On 6 May 2020, during the first wave of the global COVID-19 pandemic, The Game Changer artwork by Banksy was unveiled at University Hospital Southampton.

You can read more about the arrival of the artwork here.

The original canvas was auctioned in March 2021, with the proceeds going towards benefitting health organisations and charities across the UK that enhance the care and treatment provided by the NHS, including Southampton Hospitals Charity.

The Charity worked closely with UHS staff to identify what the needs of our people are, to put the expenditure of the Banksy donation to the best use. The main issues highlighted were about space, facilities, staffrooms and changing rooms.

Therefore, a proportion of the funds that our charity received from the sale have been spent on:

  • Renovations of 40 staffrooms (being completed summer 2023)
  • Creating a dedicated wellbeing hub (opening 5 July)
  • A rooftop garden at Princess Anne Hospital.
