Lead healthcare scientist wins national award

Dr Joanne Horne was named biomedical scientist of the year at the recent Advancing Healthcare Awards, which were presented on 12 April at the Park Plaza Victoria, London.

As well as taking on the role of education and training lead for her department, Jo has found innovative ways to promote careers in healthcare science and raise awareness of the field, including on Twitter, where she has over 2000 followers.

Jo has been featured in The Guardian and The Biomedical Scientist magazine and was invited to Downing Street as part of last year’s celebrations for the NHS’s 70th anniversary.

She said: “I was thrilled to be nominated and shortlisted for the biomedical scientist of the year award, alongside other fantastic biomedical scientists from around the UK.

“To be recognised by my peers is amazing and I only hope that I can inspire others working in biomedical science to set the bar high, achieve their own goals and then encourage others to do the same.”
