Official opening of fully accessible changing facility
While most public places have a standard accessible toilet, many people with disabilities and their carers find that these do not meet their needs.
Changing Places is a national organisation that campaigns for facilities that meet the needs of people who need help from a carer to use the toilet or have their continence pad changed. The facility features a height-adjustable changing bench, a hoist system, and an accessible shower. It’s been approved by Changing Places and added to their map, which you can find on their website.
Anna McMurray, a specialist learning disability nurse at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, campaigned for the the Trust’s new Changing Places toilet facility, which had its official opening on 8 April 2019.
At the launch event, the learning disability team was joined by the Mayor of Southampton and representatives from Southampton Mencap. The mayor cut the ribbon with Trust CEO Paula Head.
