Introducing the children's short stay assessment unit
Patients may be referred to the assessment unit from their GP or directly from the emergency department for a variety of acute and long-term conditions.
The purpose-built unit will replace the former paediatric assessment unit following the construction of the new children’s emergency and trauma department.
If your child has been referred to the assessment unit, you should enter the hospital via the children’s emergency department and report to the reception upon arrival.
Your child will be assessed by a nurse and then a medical or surgical doctor. If a doctor would like your child to stay longer than 24 hours, we will transfer them to one of our children’s wards.
The £5.1 million specialist emergency facility, which houses the new assessment unit, is expected to receive more than 30,000 youngsters every year from across the south of England. The state-of-the-art department also includes an eight-bed observation area, 11 glass-fronted and soundproof cubicles and on-hand x-ray facilities.
