Consultation underway into new UHS health and innovation campus at Adanac Park
A new state-of-the-art development is being proposed for the Health and Innovation Campus by University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) and its delivery partner, Prime. Plans have been made available online for public viewing and feedback.
UHS delivers outstanding standards of care for the region. As a leading university teaching hospital, it is able to deliver treatments for virtually every condition where one exists whilst leading ground-breaking research to meet the challenges of the future. One issue which restricts the Trust is a lack of physical space for future development on site. To address this, together with Prime it secured outline planning permission to develop a Health and Innovation Campus (at the site formerly known as Bargain Farm, Nursling). A new park and ride facility is currently in construction on the site.
The Trust have identified Plot Two, which sits adjacent to the roundabout on Brownhill Way, as a suitable site to locate services including a sterile services department, an aseptic pharmacy and administrative space. This will provide a space for the sterilisation of devices, equipment and instruments used in medical care, a controlled environment in which highly qualified staff can prepare injectable medicines and space for staff to work off-site if their role does not require them to be based on the main hospital campus.
At present, these facilities are based on-site at Southampton General Hospital. As UHS’s largest site, it is home to the main hospital, university and research buildings. Space for clinical expansion is now very limited. However, by relocating the SSD and aseptic pharmacy and creating office space off the main site, UHS will be able to free up additional space at the main hospital for the delivery of frontline clinical care.
Sustainability is a key element of this development. As part of UHS's goal to reach net carbon zero by 2045, PV panels will be installed to produce renewable energy for the facility, whilst new plants and trees will be planted within the development to promote biodiversity. The development, which will encompass dedicated parking, would also reduce the number of staff journeys into the centre of Southampton, reducing impact on air quality in the city centre.
As the region’s primary provider of health services and Southampton’s largest employer, UHS hopes the local community will get behind these plans to provide state-of-the-art facilities, create space on the main hospital site for priority patient care and improve overall services for the county in a time of ever-increasing demand.
Before submitting a planning application to Test Valley Borough Council, UHS and Prime would like to invite local people to view plans and submit any feedback via their online engagement space. The website can be accessed at www.primeplc.com/adanacSSD and will be open for comments from Monday 28 February to Sunday 13 March 2022.
Ewan Forsyth, Development Director at Prime, said, “Gathering public feedback is an essential part of our development process. Our public consultations regarding the new park and ride at Adanac Health and Innovation Campus and the main entrance at Southampton General Hospital were invaluable in terms of understanding local perspectives and shaping designs. We look forward to reading comments on our proposals as we work to shape the final plans, prior to planning submission.
