Celebrating 60 Years of City Status
As we mark the diamond jubilee of Southampton's city status, we're not only commemorating a significant milestone in our vibrant community's history but also reflecting on the pivotal role we play in shaping our remarkable city.
University Hospital Southampton (UHS) proudly stands as Southampton’s largest employer, offering almost every job you can imagine at our ‘city within a city’. Over 250 different job roles in fact. From doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, and healthcare scientists, to plumbers, porters, electricians and even gardeners.
Over 13,000 people in the UHS family come together every day to help keep our Trust operating at the leading edge, providing services to around 1.9 million people in Southampton and South Hampshire.
Who we are
UHS is one of only two major trauma centres in the south of England. Our children’s hospital leads the UK as one of the top three paediatric treatment centres.
Together with Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance (HIOWAA) we have helicopter emergency medical services which provide an advanced critical care team to sick and injured people in emergency situations across the area.
What really sets us apart is that for over 50 years we’ve been leading the way as one of the largest and most prolific university teaching hospitals for research in the NHS. Through our fantastic partnership with the University of Southampton, as well as other research organisations, we are actively engaged in ground-breaking studies across our various sites and facilities.
Among so much more, we’re also a renowned centre of excellence for maternity care, looking after nearly 6,000 women and their families each year.
UHS ambitions
Our vision extends beyond the walls of our hospital. We are dedicated to building a workforce that mirrors the rich and diverse tapestry of our community, ensuring that everyone, whether patient or employee, feels valued and respected.
As such a large employer, we recognise our impact on the environment and our local population. So, we’re supporting the NHS to become the world’s first health service to reach carbon net zero with our Green Plan, including a £33m decarbonisation programme.
Not only will we focus on the sustainability of our environment, but also our future healthcare practitioners and researchers. In partnership with the University of Southampton, the state-of-the-art teaching laboratory (Life Lab) is designed for school students, helping them learn the science behind health messages. It’s an inspirational place where young people can get an early introduction to the life-changing work clinical research can achieve, as well as giving them insight into the world of NHS services.
Looking ahead
As we celebrate the 60th year of city status and reflect on our place in the heart of Southampton, we look to the future with excitement and purpose.
UHS is not just a hospital, but a dynamic hub of continuous care, compassion, and innovation, all made up of many people from the city itself.
We see endless possibilities to shape the future of healthcare, guided by our unwavering dedication to research and outstanding patient outcomes.
Thank you for being part of this remarkable journey with us.
