Meet the team (radiation protection)
The radiation protection group is comprised of 11 healthcare scientists. Within the team we have medical physics experts (MPE), a radiation protection advisor (RPA), laser protection advisors (LPA) and a radioactive waste advisor (RWA). We train healthcare scientists via different pathways including the Scientist Training Programme (STP) and STP Equivalence.- Ben Johnson
Head of group
Ben Johnson is the head of radiation protection group in medical physics, based at Southampton General Hospital. Ben has 20 years of experience of delivering radiation protection services across NHS and private sector clients.
- Fiona Wall
Deputy head of radiation protection
Fiona is a principal clinical scientist and MPE who re-joined the team in 2017 from Barts Health NHS Trust. She completed the scientist training programme at Southampton in 2015. Fiona coordinates the quality assurance programme for x-ray equipment across the Trust and has a keen interest in optimisation, particularly of CT.

Principal physicist in radiation protection
Ben completed the scientist training programme in 2019 having joined the radiation protection group in 2016.
- Cat Rivett
Principal physicist, medical physics expert
Cat re-joined the team in 2020 from Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, having started the scientist training programme at Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust.
- Lucia Vazquez Bonome
Digital education creator
Lucia’s educational background includes an HND in advertising (issued in Spain), a BA in media production with honours, and an MSc in marketing with merit, both from Solent University. She also holds an MA in multimedia translation from Universidad de Vigo.
Lucia has experience working in various communications departments in both England and Spain.
