    Robert Marchbanks (he/him)

Consultant clinical scientist and chartered engineer

Dr Robert Marchbanks is a consultant clinical scientist and chartered engineer specialising in non-invasive and direct brain pressure and haemodynamic measurements. He is the director of the non-invasive intracranial pressure assessment (NIPA) unit at University Hospital Southampton and leads the neurological physics group.

Robert pioneered non-surgical brain pressure measurements and invented the cerebral and cochlear fluid pressure (CCFP) analyser, an internationally used clinical research technique. He has published over 50 journal papers, edited two books, and contributed to several patents. He is the managing director of a spin-out company from the University of Southampton that provides CCFP analyser flight units for the International Space Station and the NASA 'Spaceflight associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS)' project.

Robert has received awards for his contributions to medical engineering, including two NASA certificates of recognition for his contributions to improving human presence in space. He is a former clinical director of the Royal National Throat Nose and Ear Hospital, London, and his positions have included interim programme manager for WessexBio; honorary senior research fellow at Southampton University and University College London; research professor at Abramson Center for Future Health, University of Houston, Texas, USA.

Future translational research concerns applying non-invasive brain pressure and haemodynamic measurements to screen and detect abnormalities associated with neurodegenerative diseases.
