Foundation Programme (UKFP)
The Foundation Programme is a two-year, work-based training programme which bridges the gap between medical school and specialty/general practice training. The Foundation Programme is part of the continuum of medical education. It ensures that newly qualified doctors develop their clinical and professional skills in the workplace in readiness for core, specialty or general practice training. The Foundation Programme aims to ensure that all doctors deliver safe and effective patient care and aspire to excellence in their professional development in accordance with GMC guidance.
Training programmes are designed to ensure that all foundation doctors undergo a balanced programme which enables them to meet the competences and outcomes set by the GMC as described in the curriculum.

Recruitment
All recruitment to foundation programmes in the UK is a national online process. This includes recruitment to specialised foundation programmes and F2 stand-alone posts. Details of the application process are available on the UK Foundation Programme (UKFPO) website. Online applications are made via Oriel.
Teaching and training
Foundation years 1s and 2s will be invited to the all-day sessions.
Surgical teaching is conducted on the wards.
All departments within the Trust have departmental teaching/training. You will get these dates when you join your department.
Supervisors
You will be assigned supervisors to help guide you both educational and clinically. It is a good idea to arrange a meeting at the start of your placement to discuss what learning opportunities are available and what is expected of you.
Programme directors
- Dr Guhan Viswesvaraiah - FY1 programme director
- Dr Ewan Brownlee - FY2 programme director
Responsible for overseeing the education and wellbeing of all Foundation Programme doctors.
Adhoc meetings are available with Foundation Programme directors. This is to allow you both to bring up any concerns or questions around your training and for you to ask advice on your career.
Foundation representative
The Foundation Programme recognises that sometimes you just need to speak to someone in the same situation as you to get ideas or ask for advice and therefore we have established a fellowship representative that is a current fellow within the Trust. The fellowship representative is a connection point between doctors and the deanery, but not only that, they will be able to organise courses, audits, projects and events were the fellowship doctors can lead and participate to build their portfolio and get more points in training number applications.
