Transforming lives and healthcare through research – spotlight on cancer research

This event was an opportunity to discover more about our pioneering cancer research at UHS and the University of Southampton (UoS).

Taking place on World Cancer Day on 4 February, the session was hosted by Professor Jonathan Strefford, head of the school of cancer sciences, UoS, who gave an overview of cancer research successes in Southampton.

This was followed by Dr Zoë Walters, associate professor in translational epigenomics, focusing on how cancer evades the immune system, reawakening the immune system to treat cancer and research from bench to bedside.

Professor Andrew Davies, professor of haematological oncology, UoS, looked at how the Southampton Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre translates discovery to patient benefit, before the presentations concluded with examples of some our clinical trials from Professor Simon Crabb, professor of experimental cancer therapeutics, UoS and honorary consultant in medical oncology, UHS.

The Q&A session covered what research has been done to identify the effects of treatments on cancer survivors and how UHS clinicians and patients can get involved in clinical trials.

Transforming lives and healthcare through research – spotlight on healthy ageing

Our population is ageing. By 2040, nearly one in seven people in the UK will be over the age of 75.

As we get older, there are some conditions and illnesses that we are more likely to develop. The immune system also become slower to respond.

Southampton researchers are leading new approaches to help people live healthier for longer and this event focused on latest research into preventing weakening of bones and muscles.

Speakers also covered social isolation and the importance of good nutrition.
