Children's PCD management service
Specialist follow-up care for children with PCD is provided at Southampton General Hospital.
We will see your child in an outpatient clinic every three months. During a clinic, your child will be seen by several members of the team, all of who specialise in PCD, including:
- a paediatric respiratory consultant
- an ENT (ear, nose and throat) consultant
- a PCD nurse specialist
- a respiratory physiotherapist
- a respiratory physiologist.
We monitor patients' lung function and collect sputum samples (by coughing into a pot) or cough swabs to monitor for chest infections. Our ENT specialists assess any issues with your child's ears and nose and we check to ensure physiotherapy is being performed correctly.
Every year your child will have an annual review. This will include further tests to ensure optimum management of your child’s condition. For example a chest x-ray, detailed lung function testing and collection of sputum sample or cough swab, as well as reviews by both the physiotherapist and ENT specialist. We will also arrange for an annual hearing test.
We offer home visits, school visits, telephone advice and support when required.
Between clinic visits, the PCD team can be contacted via our administrator, Sam Packham.
