Children's surgery

If your child is having surgery and going home on the same day, they'll be looked after on the John Atwell children's day ward. If they need to stay in hospital for longer after surgery, they'll usually stay on ward G4, in Southampton Children's Hospital.

Sometimes children are cared for on other wards, including the paediatric intensive care unit and the children’s high dependency unit.

Children are referred to us for surgery from all over Wessex, and beyond. We see children from Southampton, Portsmouth, Winchester, Poole, Dorchester, Salisbury, Basingstoke, Frimley, Chichester, Isle of Wight and the Channel Islands, and we often admit children from elsewhere in the country.

We most commonly carry out intestinal, thoracic and genito-urinary surgery. You can find out more about the conditions we treat, and what happens when you come in.

The nearest similar specialist surgery units are in London, Oxford, Bristol and Brighton.
