Children's radiology (scans and imaging)
You can find us on C level in Southampton General Hospital, near the main entrance and the children's outpatient department.
Work to update our department has recently been completed. We have hi-tech digital x-ray rooms, a dedicated fluoroscopy suite letting us take real-time moving images, and a novel x-ray chair to make imaging children with spinal problems safer and more comfortable.
We've also improved the environment to be more suited to children. Our waiting area includes a sensory corner, providing interactive activities and visual stimulation including bubble tube lighting.
Children's CT and MRI scans take place in the cross sectional imaging department on B level in the Wessex Neurological Centre.
Our team
Our team includes consultant paediatric radiologists and specialty registrars in radiology, who spend time working in the department during their training. We have a superintendent who is also the specialist manager, 12 paediatric specialist radiographers and two paediatric radiographers. Our administrative and clerical team support the department.
Our hours
To reduce waiting times and delays, we offer an appointment service for GP patients. GPs or patients requiring an X-ray should phone us on 023 8120 4191 for an appointment. We aim to arrange appointments within 24 hours for urgent cases.
Our department is open from 8.30am to 5pm for routine work. Outside of these hours, we only see emergencies.
What's it like to have an x-ray?
Some children might feel nervous about having an x-ray or another kind of scan. In this video, Leo the Pets as Therapy dog shows us that it's nothing to worry about. Watch the video on YouTube.
