What happens when I come in?
Most children's first visit will be to the weekly immunology clinic at Southampton General Hospital. Our specialist team will assess your child, and you will usually see one of our consultant children's immulologists. There will often be more than one doctor at your appointment.
Disorders of the immune system are rare, and tests will often show that your child's immune system is working normally. They may need a blood test to confirm this.
If we do suspect an immune deficiency, you won't usually be given a diagnosis on your child's first visit because we will need their blood test results to confirm the diagnosis.
There are a wide range of treatments available for immunodeficiencies. Once your child's condition has been identified, we'll explain the best treatment to manage it. We can answer your questions and give you advice and training in the use of any drugs.
