Professor Paul Elkington

Prof Elkington is a professor of medicine, and an honourary respiratory consultant.

Training and education

Prof Elkington trained in medicine in Oxford from 1988 to 1995, and then at London teaching hospitals from 1995 to 2007, in addition to working in Zambia.

He was awarded a certificate of specialist training in respiratory medicine and general internal medicine in 2007.

Experience

Alongside his role as a consultant in respiratory medicine, Prof Elkington is also a professor of respiratory medicine at the University of Southampton.

Research

Prof Elkington moved to the University of Southampton in June 2012 to develop a research programme centred on the role of proteases in the pathology of pulmonary infection.

His research focuses around his sub-specialty interest in tuberculosis, with research into how tuberculosis causes lung tissue damage, leading to cavitation and hence spread. The primary focus of the laboratory is the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family of enzymes, with the ultimate aim of improving tuberculosis diagnosis and treatment.
