After training in anaesthesia, Prof Grocott specialised in adult general intensive care medicine, and is a fellow of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine. His MD research focused on improving outcomes following major surgery through describing outcomes and developing and evaluating interventions, as well as applied human physiology.
Experience
Prof Grocott joined the Trust in July 2008. He has been a professor of anaesthesia and critical care medicine at the University of Southampton since 2011.
His roles include:
- head of critical care research for University Hospital Southampton and the Southampton NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (2011-present)
- clinical lead for perioperative medicine (treatment given during surgery) at UHS (2014-present)
- research and development lead for division A at UHS (2010-present)
- member of UHS’s clinical ethics committee (2010-2014).
Before coming to work at UHS, Prof Grocott was a senior lecturer in critical care medicine at UCL and Whittington Hospital, London. Before that, he trained in anaesthesia and critical care at UCLH, Royal Free and Whittington Hospitals, and in internal medicine at St George’s Hospital.
Key achievements
- Prof Grocott is the NIHR national specialty lead for anaesthesia, perioperative medicine and pain (2015-present).
- He was the founding director of the NIAA Health Services Research Centre, Royal College of Anaesthetists (2010 to 2016) and chairs the National Emergency Laparotomy Audit (2010-present).
- Prof Grocott is the director of Xtreme Everest, a team of doctors, nurses and scientists who use research conducted at high altitudes to improve treatment for people who are critically ill. In 2007, he reached the summit of Mount Everest as leader of the Caudwell Xtreme Everest expedition.
- He leads the Fit-4-Surgery Research Consortium (2011 to present).
- He’s an elected council member of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (2015-present) and an elected board member of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine (2013-present). He also serves as a board member of the National Institute of Academic Anaesthesia.
Previously, Prof Grocott was the director of UCL’s Centre for Altitude Space and Extreme Environment Medicine (2000-2010). From 2008 to 2011, he was director of the Surgical Outcome Research Centre at UCL.
In Wessex, Prof Grocott was the clinical lead for division six of the Wessex Clinical Research Network (CRN) from 2014 to 2015 and Wessex CLRN lead for anaesthesia and critical care medicine (2009-2014).
