Experience

Prof Fall is professor of international paediatric epidemiology, University of Southampton, and honorary consultant in child health, University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust.

As a junior doctor, she acquired a wide variety of clinical experience in accident and emergency; general medicine, cardiology and haematology in adults; general practice; obstetrics and gynaecology; and paediatrics. Between 1986 and 1989 she underwent further training in general paediatrics.

In 1989, Prof Fall made a career change into research. After obtaining a doctorate in epidemiology, she now directs a research programme into the early-life factors that increase people’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes and heart disease in developing countries. Prof Fall joined the Southampton children’s diabetes team in 1989, working mainly in the outpatient clinic. She also helps to run training sessions for families of type 1 diabetes children starting on insulin pump therapy, and carries out an annual audit of performance in the children’s diabetes outpatient clinic (compared with past years, and also with other clinics in Wessex and the wider UK).
