Prof Byrne is a consultant in endocrinology and metabolism with a sub-specialty interest in lipids (including diagnostic lipids in chemical pathology) and obesity.

Experience
Prof Byrne has worked for the Trust since 1999.
He trained in medicine, endocrinology and chemical pathology in hospitals in Cardiff, Hammersmith and Cambridge. Prof Byrne is a clinical scientist undertaking original research related to metabolic syndrome, obesity and non alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This research is particularly relevant to vascular disease, type 2 diabetes and chronic liver disease.
Key achievements
- Inaugural director of Southampton Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility, 1999 to 2004.
- Royal Society of Medicine honorary junior secretary (and committee member, lipids and cardiovascular risk section) since 2005.
- Research grants committee member for Diabetes UK, 2006 to 2012.
- Co-applicant for the NIHR Southampton Biomedical Research Unit in Nutrition, Diet and Lifestyle (obesity) in 2008, and the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre in 2011.
- Principal investigator and deputy theme lead, Southampton National Institute for Health Research Biomedical Research Centre, since 2011.
- Member of the DOHaD Society, Diabetes UK, the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, Heart UK and the British Atherosclerosis Society.
- Founder member of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes non alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) study group, 2013.
- Heart UK clinical champion, Wessex familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) genetic testing service, and member of Heart UK FH genetic testing implementation group, 2013.
- President of the Royal Society of Medicine lipids, metabolism and cardiovascular risk section, 2013 to present.
