Professor Brigitte Vollmer

Training and education
Prof Vollmer graduated from medical school at the University of Tübingen in Germany, and completed training in paediatrics and in paediatric and developmental neurology at the Children’s Hospital in Tübingen. Following this, she moved to further specialise in paediatric neurology and neonatal neurology at Great Ormond Street Hospital and University College London Hospitals, London.
Prof Vollmer obtained a PhD in paediatric neurosciences at the UCL Institute of Child Health in London. She then moved for post-doctoral training at the Department of Women’s and Children’s Health at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden, where she still holds an honorary position as senior researcher.
Experience
Prof Vollmer joined the Trust in 2010.
Her sub-specialty interest is in neonatal and developmental neurology, in particular, brain imaging and the long term motor, cognitive, and behavioural development of children born at risk (for example preterm birth, hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy of the term born newborn, and children with antenatally diagnosed brain abnormalities). She works closely with the team at the neonatal unit at Princess Anne Hospital.
Prof Vollmer is the senior lecturer in paediatric neurology at the University of Southampton.
