Ms Nishani Amerasinghe

Ms Amerasinghe is an ophthalmology surgeon with a sub-specialty interest in glaucoma.

Experience 

Ms Amerasinghe is a glaucoma consultant with expertise in the investigation, diagnosis and management of patients with glaucoma, both medically and surgically. She is experienced in laser procedures for glaucoma, augmented trabeculectomy surgery, aqueous shunt surgery and lens extractions as a glaucoma procedure. Ms Amerasinghe also performs and teaches cataract surgery.

After completion of her pre-registration year in London, she spent six months working as a neurosurgery senior house officer at Atkinson Morley’s Hospital. Ms Amerasinghe then began studying ophthalmology at the Norfolk and Norwich University before transferring to Southampton and Winchester for completion of her basic specialist training.

Ms Amerasinghe gained a national training number for ophthalmology specialist registrar training in the Wessex region, working at Southampton Eye Unit, Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth, and Royal Bournemouth General Hospital. She also spent two years gaining valuable out-of-programme experience as a glaucoma research registrar at the Singapore National Eye Centre.

Specialist registrar rotation included a glaucoma advanced sub-specialty training opportunity at Southampton Eye Unit and Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth. A Moorfields clinical glaucoma fellowship has further enhanced her glaucoma training, with experience in managing challenging and more complex cases. 

Ms Amerasinghe went on to be a locum consultant at Moorfields Eye Hospital and then undertook a consultant post at Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust before starting here at University Hospitals Southampton NHS Trust.

Key achievements

  • Completing a large research project looking into the heritability of primary angle closure. This resulted in the calculation of the sibling risk of narrow angles and a recommendation of target screening in certain populations.
  • Completing a project looking into the immediate management of acute angle closure in eye casualty at Southampton Eye Unit. As a result a protocol for the management of acute angle closure was introduced, therefore ensuring, appropriate, timely and standardised care of patients presenting with the condition.

Research

Ms Amerasinghe's specialist research interests are angle closure glaucoma, anterior segment imaging for glaucoma, and epidemiology of glaucoma.

Ms Amerasinghe has published in major international ophthalmology journals, written textbook chapters and has presented internationally and nationally many times on glaucoma and general ophthalmology. She regularly reviews academic and research articles for the leading journals in ophthalmology.
