Mr Simon Tilley

Training and education
Mr Tilley trained at University College London Hospitals NHS Trust. During his training he was also awarded a BSc in tumour biology before qualifying in 1999.
After completing his basic surgical training in Wessex in 2002, Mr Tilley spent six months working at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore, London. Following this, he worked as a research registrar at Southampton General Hospital and completed a doctorate (DM) for his thesis on the use of stem cells in orthopaedic surgery. He joined the Wessex orthopaedic training programme in 2005 and from an early stage focused on hip and knee surgery, in particular working with teams involved in complex revision work.
Fellowships
- Senior hip and knee fellowship in Sydney, with the specialist orthopaedic group. This is one of the most prestigious joint replacement fellowships available to visiting surgeons.
- Two fellowships in Southampton concentrating on complex hip and knee replacement surgery.
Experience
Mr Tilley is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon with specialist training in hip and knee replacement surgery.
He employs a truly multidisciplinary approach to hip and knee surgery. Mr Tilley believes passionately that the combination of patients taking an active role in the decision making process together with dedicated nurses, therapists and anaesthetists improve outcomes. He has developed an expertise with many types of hip and knee replacement designs and is well placed to offer the most appropriate design to his patients. This includes gender specific knee implants and the use of advanced bearings including ceramics, which are hoped to last considerably longer than traditional designs. Mr Tilley collects patient reported outcome measures (PROMS) on all of his joint replacements.

- knee arthroscopy.
He is a current member of the British Orthopaedic Association, the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh, and is on the General Medical Council Specialist Register.
Research
Mr Tilley's research interests include
- use of stem cells in joint revision surgery
- bone graft substitutes
- investigating different modes of failure in metal-on-metal hip replacements
- PROMS
- improving outcomes in patients with hip fractures.
He is also a reviewer for the British Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.
