Mr Oliver J. Harrison

Mr Harrison is a consultant thoracic surgeon with a specialist interest in minimally invasive surgery (robotic and VATS) and thoracic surgical oncology.

Training and education

Mr Harrison completed his training in cardiothoracic surgery at University Hospital Southampton and was appointed as a consultant thoracic surgeon in 2023. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Cardiothoracic Surgery, England) in 2022.

During his training Mr Harrison completed an advanced thoracic surgical oncology fellowship at the world-renowned Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre, New York, USA. He gained advanced experience in the care of patients with all types of thoracic cancers including primary and secondary lung cancer, thymic cancer and mesothelioma. He also gained extensive experience in robotic surgery.

Prior to his time in New York, Mr Harrison also completed a dedicated robotic thoracic surgery fellowship at Guy’s Hospital, London.

Experience

Mr Harrison is experienced in all aspects general adult thoracic surgery including but not limited to:

  • Lung cancer
  • Thymoma/myasthenia gravis
  • Mediastinal disease
  • Pneumothorax
  • Pleural disease/effusion
  • Disorders of the diaphragm
  • Chest wall (rib and sternum) fixation for trauma.

Mr Harrison’s specific interests include:

  • Minimally invasive thoracic surgery, including robotic and VATS techniques
  • Robotic lung resections (lobectomy and segmentectomy) for primary and secondary lung cancers
  • Robotic and navigational bronchoscopy for diagnosis and treatment of lung nodules including early-stage lung cancer
  • Enhanced recovery after surgery and the use of ambulatory chest drains to facilitate early patient discharge.

Research and achievements

Mr Harrison has a higher research degree (MD) in cardiothoracic surgery from the University of Southampton and has authored over 15 academic publications to date. Selected articles include:

Mr Harrison has given many national and international podium presentations and won multiple international prizes for his work including the European Association of Cardio-thoracic Surgery (EACTS) Investigator of the Year Award (2018), the American Association of Thoracic Surgery (AATS) Resident’s Poster Competition Winner (2021) and the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain & Ireland (SCTS) Ionescu NTN Trainee Travelling Fellowship Winner (2021).
