MS, FRCS(Orth)

Training and education

  • Medical training at the London Hospital Medical College - 1980-85

Experience

Mr Barry is a consultant in paediatric orthopaedics who joined the Trust in October 2017.

Before coming to Southampton, he worked as an orthopaedic consultant at the Royal London Hospital for 19 years, spending half of his time in children's orthopaedics and half in adult trauma and limb reconstruction. He developed an interest and experience in a wide range of orthopaedic procedures, including:

  • limb lengthening
  • correcting deformities
  • treating nonunions and malunions (when fractures either don't heal or heal in the wrong position).

He's experienced in using circular external fixators (external frames that are used to make bones longer or correct their positions) such as the Ilizarov and Taylor Spatial frames, and in lengthening limbs using either the FitBone or Precice nail.

Here at UHS, Mr Barry works with the paediatric orthopaedic service, providing a limb lengthening and deformity correction service and assessing and managing foot problems in children. He's also on the on-call rota, and has a weekly paediatric fracture clinic.

Over the past three years, Mr Barry has been part of a team travelling overseas to help provide a limb reconstruction service to patients with injuries sustained in a conflict area, working with local doctors and nurses to provide training and support.

Key achievements

  • Developing a limb reconstruction service at the Royal London Hospital
  • Leading on the introduction of a virtual fracture clinic at the Royal London Hospital
  • Becoming training programme director for the north-east Thames orthopaedic training programme (Royal London Hospital)
