Mr James Kirkby-Bott

Mr Kirkby-Bott is a general surgeon with a sub-specialty interest in endocrine surgery.

Experience

Mr Kirkby-Bott joined the Trust in January 2013 as an honorary consultant, and became substantive in July 2013.

He is a member of the acute surgery unit. A new acute surgery service is being developed to improve the experience and management of patients with acute surgical illness.

Mr Kirkby-Bott trained as an endocrine surgeon at the Hammersmith Hospital in London, and in France. He won the international endocrine fellowship position at the CHU, Lille, France in 2009, and operated and researched for 12 months for Prof Bruno Carnaille. Mr Kirkby-Bott has an academic background in endocrine disease, particularly in parathyroid and functioning adrenal surgery.

Key achievements

  • Role in developing the acute surgery service at UHS.
  • Setting up a successful endocrine surgery MDT at Kingston Hospital.
  • Developing a reputation in endocrine surgery and being the fourth UK based surgeon to be awarded the FEBS (Endocrine).

Awards and prizes

  • Norman Tanner Prize medal, Royal Society of Medicine, 2008.
  • ASiT aesculap academia prize in endocrine surgery, 2011.
  • Four times short-listed for BJS prize in endocrine surgery between 2009 and 2010.

Research

  • Numerous scientific papers on the role of vitamin D in parathyroid surgery and the effect of cortisol excess and its pre-operative management in adrenal disease.
  • Book chapters on parathyroid surgery.
  • Peer review endocrine work for the BJS and EJSO.
  • Helped develop the ESES guidelines on laparoscopic versus open adrenalectomy.
  • ICPs in acute surgery.
