Experience

Professor Dunlop has worked for the Trust since May 2002 as a consultant orthopaedic and trauma surgeon. He is also an honorary senior clinical lecturer at the University of Southampton.

Professor Dunlop is the lead orthopaedic clinician for research and development at University Hospital Southampton. He has a particular interest in the make-up of bone and bone substitutes, and has undertaken collaborative research in this field, both in this country and in Australia, which has increased the understanding of revision surgery. Professor Dunlop has had the opportunity to undertake stem cell research with this group, supervising students in his role as honorary senior clinical lecturer, in collaboration with University orthopaedics (Professor Cyrus Cooper and Dr Richard OC Oreffo, University of Southampton bone and joint group), as a direct extension of his MD thesis. Two trainee orthopaedic surgeons undertaking this research were awarded their MD’s in 2008.

Research

As an orthopaedic surgeon specialising in revision hip surgery it is not unusual to come across patients with critical bone loss. Research with this group is focussed around development of biomimetic scaffolds and improvement of traditional (donor) bone graft techniques through: stem cell augmentation; mechanical impaction enhancement; synthetic material utilisation; and signal potentiation. The group has reached the stage of performing several translational procedures on human volunteers in the operating theatre, with early, published results. The group has approached research councils for funding (BBSRC/EPSRC/MRC) and is in discussion with industry having registered patents for the techniques. The future potential is real and exciting.
