Mr David Layfield

Training and education
Mr Layfield qualified from Imperial College School of Medicine in 2007, where he trained initially in London before moving to Wessex. Mr Layfield was awarded a PhD in immunobiology and tissue responses to vaccination in 2017 by the University of Southampton. He achieved GMC specialist registration in 2020 in general surgery with a declared sub-specialty interest in colorectal surgery. His post-CCT fellowship placement was in complex colorectal surgery, inflammatory bowel disease and intestinal failure at Salford Royal Foundation Trust.
Mr Layfield has a specialist interest in intestinal failure surgery and complex abdominal wall reconstruction. In November 2021 he was appointed as a consultant in intestinal failure surgery, complex abdominal wall reconstruction and general colorectal surgery at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust.
Experience
Mr Layfield undertakes surgery to reconstruct the gastrointestinal tract and/or the abdominal wall as well as surgery for complex Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. As such he has a wide-ranging practice in both open and minimally invasive complex benign colorectal surgery, major bowel resection and abdominal wall hernia fixation.
