Mr Benjamin Patterson

Training and education
Mr Patterson’s undergraduate studies were at Imperial College London. He completed a PhD at St George’s University of London. His higher vascular surgical training was in London at St George’s, St Thomas’ and St Mary’s Hospitals, and included a period as an NIHR clinical lecturer.
Practice and experience
Mr Patterson is a consultant vascular surgeon who joined the Trust in 2019. As well as being experienced in general vascular surgery, his sub-speciality interest lies in major aortic interventions involving the aorta in the abdomen and chest. He is one of the highest volume aortic surgeons in the country.
He works closely with a team of vascular, cardiothoracic and interventional radiology specialists to provide a comprehensive approach to aortic problems for people in the Hampshire and Dorset area.
His further areas of interest are in reconstructing major blood vessels during surgery for advanced abdominal cancer and providing vascular support for both spinal and head and neck surgeons.

Research
Mr Patterson’s PhD involved studying the prevention of complications following thoracic aneurysm repair. In a previous role, he was awarded an NIHR clinical academic lectureship to conduct post-doctoral research.
Currently Mr Patterson is an honorary senior lecturer at the University of Southampton, and is a local investigator for several national trials.
His ongoing research collaborations include local work with the South Coast complex exenteration team, and internationally with the Aortic Centre at CHRU in Lille, France and Fudan University in Shanghai, China.
Mr Patterson has published over 100 peer reviewed papers which have attracted over 3000 citations, written numerous book chapters and presented his work all over the world.
