Mr Bashar Zeidan

Mr Zeidan is a consultant surgeon who specialises in reconstructive surgery for people who have had a breast tumour removed.

Mr Zeidan graduated in 2003 and completed his surgical training in Wessex in 2018. He worked with world-renowned general, breast and plastic surgeons over the past 15 years before joining UHS as an oncoplastic breast surgeon (a surgeon who uses cosmetic surgery techniques to reconstruct the breast after tumour removal).  

During his surgical rotation, he was appointed as an academic clinical fellow in surgery and took time out to undertake a PhD investigating breast cancer biomarkers (molecules in the tissue, blood or other body fluids that are signs of breast cancer). Following the successful award of his PhD in 2013, he was appointed as a clinical lecturer in surgery at the University of Southampton.

He subsequently secured the prestigious National TIG Breast Oncoplastic Fellowship in Portsmouth Hospitals, where he successfully completed his training in advanced breast conservation and reconstructive techniques.

Experience

Mr Zeidan is an oncoplastic breast surgeon who joined the Trust in 2018.

He provides a full range of oncoplastic breast services, including:

  • advanced breast conserving surgery (surgery to remove cancer while leaving as much healthy breast tissue as possible and reshaping the breast)
  • partial breast reconstruction (reconstructing part of the breast after surgery to remove cancer)
  • immediate and delayed breast reconstruction after mastectomy
  • lipomodelling (transferring fat from another part of the body to the breast to reconstruct it after cancer surgery)
  • revisional and symmetrisation breast surgery (cosmetic surgery to improve the appearance of the breasts after cancer surgery).

Mr Zeidan is experienced in the management of all aspects of breast disease, particularly in the restoration of shape and form following breast surgery, breast reconstruction after cancer operations and breast cosmesis (improving the appearance of the breast).

His practice offers advanced breast conservation techniques including partial breast reconstruction using therapeutic mammoplasties, local perforator and mini latissimus dorsi flaps.

He also specialises in a wide range of whole breast reconstruction by means of implant-based, autologous (using tissue from the patient who is having surgery) and hybrid techniques.

Mr Zeidan’s focus on patient centred innovation, quality improvement and safety is pivotal to his clinical practice and was evident during his role as the breast unit lead for governance (November 2018 to October 2019), and the breast cancer MDT lead at present.

Research

Mr Zeidan has authored over 20 papers in peer reviewed international journals on breast cancer and general surgery. He is actively involved in national research collaboratives and is interested in pioneering research to improve patients’ care and outcomes.
