Mr Arjun Takhar

Mr Takhar is a consultant hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgeon who joined the Trust in 2013

Training and education

Mr Takhar has a BMBS (bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery) and a BMed Sci (bachelor of medical science) in biochemistry. He completed his basic surgical training in Birmingham, where he worked as an honorary clinical lecturer at the University of Birmingham. Mr Takhar then went on to complete a PhD in gastrointestinal surgery at the University of Nottingham. During his time in formal research, Mr Takhar was shortlisted for the Patey Prize and the SET for Britain Millennium Medal.

He completed his higher surgical training predominantly at the Birmingham Liver Unit, specialising in hepatobiliary (relating to the liver, gallbladder and bile ducts), pancreatic and liver transplantation surgery. He then undertook a year-long fellowship in laparoscopic liver surgery under the mentorship of Mr Neil Pierce here at University Hospital Southampton. Mr Takhar was awarded the fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) in general surgery in 2010 and the certificate of completion of training (CCT) in March 2013.

Experience

Mr Takhar is a consultant hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgeon who joined the Trust in 2013.

In addition to performing a range of operative procedures for benign and malignant disorders of the liver, biliary and pancreatic organ systems, Mr Takhar is a regional surgical adviser for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and plays an active role in training and mentoring the surgeons of the future. He’s also the infectious diseases lead for the department of surgery.

Mr Takhar’s sub-specialty interests include the treatment of neuroendocrine tumours (tumours that form from cells that release hormones in the blood), resections of large abdominal tumours and liver metatastic disease in patients with ocular (eye) and cutaneous (skin) melanoma. He is a core member of both the Wessex Neuroendocrine Tumour Group and a multidisciplinary team treating ocular melanoma.
