Training and education

Mr Cole studied medicine at Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School (now part of Imperial College) at the University of London. He qualified with a BSc (Hons) in 1987 and as a doctor in 1990. After a period in London including demonstrating anatomy at Queen Mary and Westfield College, Mr Cole underwent his basic surgical training in Bristol and was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Eng) in 1994.

Mr Cole continued his orthopaedic training in Oxford, gaining experience at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, an internationally acclaimed institution for specialist orthopaedic surgery, and also gained extensive trauma experience at John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. During his training Mr Cole developed an interest in shoulder and trauma surgery. He undertook specialist fellowships in shoulder surgery in Oxford and trauma surgery at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Toronto, Canada.

Experience

Mr Cole was appointed as a consultant at UHS in 2001, specialising in shoulder surgery. He treats all conditions of the shoulder including trauma, sports injuries, arthritic and congenital problems. Using the latest technological advances, a significant proportion of his surgery is performed arthroscopically allowing much of the surgery to be done as day cases, with a better cosmetic result and rapid rehabilitation.

Mr Cole keeps a comprehensive database of all patients and operations along with pre-operative subjective scores and follow up scores. You are welcome to discuss success rates of operations and the number of procedures performed with Mr Cole in his clinic. He performs 300 to 350 shoulder procedures annually.

Mr Cole was awarded the prestigious European travelling fellowship from the British Elbow and Shoulder Society in 2001. Since his appointment, he has maintained a significant interest in the education and training of future doctors. This is supported by this role as deputy programme director of the regional orthopaedic training programme for Wessex, and election to regional specialty advisor in orthopaedic surgery for the Royal College of Surgeons (Eng). Mr Cole is on the teaching faculty for the AO foundation and is on the UK education committee for the Osteosynthesis and Trauma Care Foundation.

Mr Cole is an active participant as faculty member of a number of national and international courses on all aspects of shoulder surgery. He has been invited to examine for the FRCS (tr and Orth) exam for the Royal College of Surgeons.

Research

Mr Cole has previously published research in international journals covering aspects of shoulder and elbow surgery and trauma. He has written chapters in the Oxford Textbook of Orthopaedic Surgery, Medicolegal Reporting and Apley’s System of Orthopaedics. Mr Cole currently reviews shoulder papers for the British Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and for the British elbow and shoulder societies’ new journal Shoulder and Elbow.

Mr Cole currently participates in the UKUFF trial a multicentre trial on repair of the rotator cuff.
