Training and education

Mr Arshad graduated with honours from Cambridge University in 2004. He then completed basic surgical rotations in Nottingham and higher surgical training in general, hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery in the East Midlands. This was intercalated with a two year full time clinical research fellowship in pancreatic cancer in Leicester.

He completed his fellowship training in one of Europe’s highest volume liver transplant and hepatobiliary centres, the Birmingham Liver Unit, before returning to Leicester for further advanced fellowship training.

Experience

Mr Arshad is a consultant hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgeon who joined the team at UHS in July 2018.

He receives referrals from across the central south coast for patients with benign and malignant disease of the liver, pancreas, duodenum (part of the small intestine), gallbladder and bile ducts. He carries out the full range of operations for these patients.

Mr Arshad also undertakes day surgery theatre sessions and clinics at Lymington hospital, mostly for patients who need inguinal hernia repair or cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal).

Mr Arshad has a particular interest and expertise in all aspects of the management of pancreatic cancer. He has published widely on the use of omega-3 fish oils and methods of improving quality of life in patients with advanced pancreatic cancer.

Key achievements

Founded the yearly Midlands HPB meeting programme, bringing together eight major UK hepatobiliary units for collaborative research and discussion.
Conceived and delivered a national study day for the management of borderline resectable pancreatic cancer which attracted delegates from 23 UK hepatobiliary units.
Designed and developed a novel quality improvement teaching programme which led to practice-changing projects from surgical junior doctors.

Research

Mr Arshad was awarded MD (Res) by the University of Leicester for original research into the effect of omega-3 fatty acids in patients with advanced pancreatic cancer.
He has an ongoing research interest in novel biological agents to improve quality of life in patients with advanced pancreatic cancer.
