Dr Zia Saad

Dr Saad is a consultant in nuclear medicine who specialises in imaging and cancer treatment techniques that use radiation.

Experience

Dr Saad is a consultant in nuclear medicine who joined the Trust in 2016. Before coming to UHS, he was a consultant at University College London Hospital and Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.

Dr Saad works within all aspects of nuclear medicine. He provides diagnostic and therapeutic services for patients in Hampshire and the neighbouring regions using radionuclide imaging, which uses a small dose of a radioactive chemical to produce scans of internal parts of the body. He carries out consultation clinics and supervises other clinicians’ work in nuclear medicine. He also administers radioactive medicinal probes for use in:

  • the treatment of thyroid disease

  • the treatment of myeloproliferative disorders (conditions that cause blood cells to grow abnormally in the bone marrow)

  • palliative treatment for bone pain caused by cancer

  • the treatment of pain caused by joint diseases like arthritis

  • selective internal radiation therapy for liver tumours and metastatic cancer

  • the treatment of neuroendocrine tumours in both children and adults.

Dr Saad has a particular interest in hybrid diagnostic molecular imaging, a technique that shows information from two different types of scan in the same image. This is used in the diagnosis of cancer as well as in the assessment of bones and joints, and to see how the heart and brain are functioning.

Key achievements

  • Introduced patient focused, streamlined radionuclide therapeutic/diagnostic clinical pathways at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge.

  • Introduced and implemented SPECT/CT scans as routine modality in sentinel lymph node studies for uro-gynaecological cancer patients (penile, vulva and cervix) at the Institute of Nuclear Medicine - University College London.

  • Winner of best poster award at the British Association of Urological Surgeons' annual meeting, 2014

  • Multi-modality imaging award at the British Nuclear Medicine Society's annual conference, 2013

  • Completed masters in nuclear medicine: science and practice, with merit awards for thesis and practical applications of nuclear medicine

Dr Saad is active in research. He's a peer reviewer and invited editor for various national and international scientific/imaging journals. His publications include:
