Dr Trevor Smith

Experience
Dr Smith is a consultant in gastroenterology with a specialist interest in clinical nutrition, intestinal failure and inflammatory bowel disease. He was appointed as a consultant in Southampton in 2010, having previously held a consultant post at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital since 2006. Dr Smith led the development of the regional intestinal failure service in Southampton over many years and has also supported the development and implementation of intestinal failure services nationally. He works as part of a team of four consultant gastroenterologists and a wider multidisciplinary nutrition support and intestinal failure team to care for patients with complex gut disorders that often require intravenous fluid and nutrition support.
Dr Smith has several leadership roles. He is the divisional clinical director (covering emergency, acute, in-patient and specialist medicine, cancer care, and pathology) and deputy chief medical officer in Southampton. He is president of the British Association for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (BAPEN: www.bapen.org.uk) from 2018 to 2023. Trevor chaired the national clinical advisory group supporting the delivery of home parenteral nutrition (HPN) during the emergency supply crisis and COVID-19 from 2019 to 2021.
Research
With an active research interest in clinical nutrition, Dr Smith recruits patients to studies of oral and enteral and parenteral nutrition support. Prior to his appointment as a consultant gastroenterologist he completed a research fellowship at the Institute of Human Nutrition (University of Southampton), for which he was awarded a Doctorate of Medicine.
