Experience

Dr Peters joined the Trust in January 2013 as the lead paediatrician for Bursledon House. Her role involves providing medical input to the team which supports children and young people (0 to 16 years) in returning to normal functioning within a non-hospital setting and maximising their ability to sustain this after discharge. This includes preliminary assessments of referred patients, securing funding for admission on a case-by-case basis and overseeing admissions. 

Dr Peters also sees patients in general paediatric outpatient clinics, plays an active part in the departmental teaching programme and chairs Bursledon House governance meetings. 

Prior to joining the Trust, Dr Peters was a consultant general paediatrician at Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, with a special interest in respiratory paediatrics, allergy and child mental health. She was also Portsmouth's named doctor for safeguarding children and lead doctor for unexpected deaths in childhood.

In 2013, Dr Peters became deputy convenor of the Paediatric Mental Health Association (affiliated to the RCPCH) and become convenor for a three year term in May 2016. Since November 2014, she has also had a role with West Hampshire CCG, as designated doctor for unexpected child deaths.

Key achievements

  • Establishing paediatric respiratory services in Portsmouth from 1996 onwards
  • Co-managing two separate and substantial school outbreaks of tuberculosis two years apart in Portsmouth
  • Implementing the rapid response child death review process in Portsmouth from 2007

  • Developing and supervising BM5 research projects into outcomes post-discharge from Bursledon House
