Experience

Mr Rees joined the Trust in January 2013 following four years as a consultant urologist in Winchester. Prior to this, he was a locum consultant at University College London Hospital, and is currently honorary consultant urologist at UCLH.

As well as practising general urology since 2000, Mr Rees has sub-specialised, and provides a tertiary service for andrology (the treatment of conditions specific to men) and genito-urethral reconstructive surgery within a team of nine consultant urologists at UHS. This sub-specialty includes surgery for:

urethral stricture disease
male incontinence
erectile dysfunction
male infertility
penile cancer
Peyronie’s disease
other genital disorders such as lichen sclerosus (BXO) and lymphoedema.

Mr Rees performs over 50 urethral reconstructive procedures a year, and sees over 100 new patients with Peyronie’s disease annually. He enjoys working collaboratively with allied multi-disciplinary colleagues, to provide the optimum care for patients. Multidisciplinary teams he's part of include:

urethral stricture disease: south of England urethral surgery MDT (London, Bristol, Southampton, Reading & Portsmouth)
penile cancer: hub/spoke network and in-reach surgery with penile cancer team at UCLH
complex genital reconstruction with the plastic surgery team at Salisbury
erectile dysfunction and testosterone replacement clinic at UHS with nurse specialist and GP with special interest
male infertility: regular clinic and surgical sperm retrieval at Complete Fertility Centre, Southampton.

Research

Mr Rees has a strong interest in clinical research with the ultimate aim of improving patient care. He’s currently investigator at Southampton for two National Institute of Health Research funded trials examining the best choice of procedure for recurrent urethral stricture (the OPEN trial), and the best choice of device for male incontinence (the MASTER trial). He’s also working with Professor Fader on a Prostate Cancer UK funded trial examining options for devices in incontinence.

Mr Rees spent a period of time in laboratory research looking at the pharmacology of uro-genital smooth muscle at the renowned Wolfson Institute for Biomedical Research at University College London. He has presented over 100 papers at national and international urological meetings since 2000, and has published extensively in the field of andrology.
