Experience
Dr Gilbert has worked for the Trust since June 2000.
Before joining the Trust, Dr Gilbert was a locum consultant in paediatric nephrology at St James's Hospital, Leeds and Birmingham Children's Hospital. His first consultant post was at the Red Cross War Memorial Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa.
Key achievements
- Introduced continuous veno-venous haemofiltration for the treatment of acute kidney injury to the children’s hospital in Cape Town.
- Designed and oversaw the building of the haemodialysis unit in Southampton.
- Published the first report of the use of rituximab for treating refractory nephrotic syndrome.
- Was a member of a group that identified PIK3R1 as the gene causing SHORT syndrome.
- Was a member of a group that described a new form of congenital disorder of glycosylation.
- Was a member of a group describing a mutation of AMMECR1 as the cause of the dysmorphic syndrome MFHIEN.
- Published the first reported use of tolvaptan for the treatment of severe, neonatal polycystic kidney disease.
- Was the first in the UK to use LDL apheresis to treat drug-resistant nephrotic syndrome in children.
- Is a member of Genomics England's clinical interpretation partnership for renal disease, part of the 100,000 Genomes Project.
- Has been an invited speaker at numerous national and international nephrological conferences and symposia.
- Is a member of the clinical ethics committee at UHS.

Research
Dr Gilbert has published widely in all areas of paediatric nephrology, with more than 40 papers in peer-reviewed journals. He is the local principal investigator for numerous national collaborative studies and a joint applicant on several NIHR (National Institute for Health Research) funded projects.
