Experience

Dr Boger was appointed as a consultant in gastroenterology and advanced endoscopy at the Trust in April 2012.

He cares for both inpatients and outpatients with a wide variety of gastrointestinal diseases, but has a particular interest in problems affecting the upper gastrointestinal tract and endoscopy. Dr Boger undertakes a variety of endoscopic procedures (over 700 per year) including more complex techniques such as removing large growths from intestines (polypectomy) using endoscopic mucosal resection or endoscopic submucosal dissection. He also performs dilatation, stent insertion, and leads the service at Southampton for radiofrequency ablation of Barrett’s oesophagus using the HALO device. Dr Boger is accredited to perform bowel cancer screening colonoscopy, undertaking approximately 150 per year.

Dr Boger's other roles include clinical governance lead for gastroenterology and lead for final year students in medicine. He teaches on colonoscopy and polypectomy courses.

Dr Boger is medical advisor to Barrett’s Wessex, a local charity focused on raising awareness and providing support for patients with Barrett’s oesophagus. In 2011, sufficient funds were raised to purchase the HALO device for Southampton General Hospital.

Awards and prizes

  • Research grant from the Wessex Cancer Trust to undertake research on the role of lipoxygenases in the pathogenesis of Barrett’s adenocarcinoma.
  • British Society of Gastroenterology travelling fellowship attending the Medical University of South Carolina and training in advanced therapeutic endoscopy.

Research

Dr Boger is principal investigator for BOSS, CHOPIN and HALT-IT clinical trials at Southampton, looking at aspects of Barrett’s oesophagus and treatment of upper gastrointestinal bleeding respectively.
