Dr Nicolas Weir

Dr Weir is a neurologist with a sub-specialty interest in stroke.

  • Research (MD thesis and MSc) Edinburgh University, 1996 to 2000.
  • Specialist registrar in neurology, Sheffield, 2000 to 2003.

Experience

Dr Weir has worked for the Trust since June 2009.

His research project investigated the use of various tools that might be used to routinely measure the quality of stroke care. He has an MSc in epidemiology, and worked with the Stroke Research Group whilst in Edinburgh. Following this, Dr Weir returned to Sheffield to complete his training as a neurologist. He then undertook a fellowship in acute stroke in Calgary, Canada, and was exposed to a state of the art system for providing hyperacute investigations and treatments for stroke and TIA.

Dr Weir returned to the UK to work as a locum consultant neurologist for a year, then went back to Calgary to work as an attending stroke neurologist for three years.

Research

Dr Weir's initial research interests lay in trying to understand variations in outcome after stroke between countries and between centres. More recently, he has published on various aspects of acute stroke care; the aetiology of stroke and secondary prevention. Dr Weir's current main interests lie in acute stroke therapies and trying to better understand cryptogenic stroke.
